The Wii U Gamepad uses a similar function for its off-screen play. But the Gamepad relies solely on its direct connection with the Wii U system, whereas the PS4/Vita combo can connect directly orover a network--meaning its range will likely be better, though going through a router would entail some extra latency.

Sony recommends a wired internet connection for PS4 users who desire the best remote play experience possible. Remote playing PS4 games on a PS Vita outside of its home network "may or may not work."

Man Makes 3D Printed Prosthetic Hand For Son For Only $10

Thanks to 3D printing, high quality prosthetic limbs are cheaper and easier to obtain than ever before. 

Twelve-year-old Leon McCarthy has been missing fingers on his left hand since birth due to lack of blood flow during his development. within the womb. Traditional prosthetic units to help people like Leon can run tens of thousands of dollars. In search of a cost-effective alternative, Leon’s father discovered a YouTube video by inventor Ivan Owen. Owen and Richard Von As from Johannesberg, South Africa began to collaborate on a high quality, low cost 3D printed prosthetic (which has already been covered by IFLScience). Because Owen and Van As do not hold a patent or charge to download the plans for the hand, the cost of materials is all that is required. 

Despite the materials being inexpensive, 3D printers still carry a hefty price tag. Fortunately, Leon’s school owns a 3D printer and made it available. With only $10 in material and about 20 minutes with the printer, Leon now has a new “cyborg” hand with fingers able to close, which he sees as “special, not different.” The fingers are controlled by flexing the wrist, which pulls on cable “tendons” to close around the desired object.

Leon is now able to grasp his backpack handle, hand a snack to a friend, and even grip the handlebars on his bike just like any other kid with two hands. As Leon grows up, Paul will merely have to print another device to accommodate the larger wrist. Because the hands are so inexpensive to build, the two have been able to tweak different designs in order to find something to better suit Leon’s needs.

Kepler Space Telescope Discovers More Potentially Habitable Planets

Yesterday researchers from the NASA’s Kepler Space Telescope announced the discovery of 833 more candidate planets, 104 of which have the potential to harbor life. Included in that 104 in their respective Goldilocks Zones are 10 that are roughly the same size as Earth. As of this announcement, the total number of exoplanets discovered by Kepler since its launch in 2009 is now at 3,538. Its mission is to explore exoplanets and discover which ones are similar in size to Earth and are capable of supporting life. The announcement is coming from Kepler Science Conference, which is hosting over 400 scientists representing 30 countries.

According to William Borucki, the principal investigator for Kepler’s science mission, these discoveries “[open] a new era of exploration of our galaxy.” The first potentially habitable planet was announced two years ago, and since astronomers now believe there that most stars in the galaxy have at least one planet there is the possibility of many more potentially life-harboring discoveries to come.

This spring, Kepler's mission was changed when two out of the four wheels used to point the telescope toward its targets broke, and NASA scientists were unable to repair them. Kepler completed its initial mission in 2012, and is currently completing an extended mission. Despite this, there is still a full year’s worth of data that has not been processed yet as Kepler monitored 150,000 stars and recorded data once every half hour for those four operational years. 

One analysis of Kepler’s data suggests that around 20% of sun-like stars have an Earth-like planet. So far, there have not been any reports of any such planet that completely mirrors Earth in terms of habitability and revolution length around a star like ours, but astronomers will continue to search.

New Law of Urination: Mammals Take 20 Seconds to Pee

Call it the other Golden Rule: Scientists have found that all mammals weighing more than 2.2 pounds (a kilogram) empty their full bladders in about 20 seconds.

Like many new parents, David Hu, a mechanical engineer at the Georgia Institute of Technology, has changed a lot of diapers. Unlike many new parents, however, these soggy diapers caused Hu to think about the physics of urination.

“While I was changing these diapers, I was wondering how it would be different for different animals. How much fluid would they create and how long would it take to leave the body?” Hu said. (Also see “Growing Teeth and Four More Odd Uses for Urine.”)

“The physics of urination—what the forces are and how they affect how quickly urine comes out, is not totally understood, even though it’s a really old problem.”

Although it might sound silly on the surface, urination is actually serious business in the medical and veterinary worlds, especially during the aging process. Many men get enlarged prostates as they get older, which can narrow the urethra and impede urine flow. Veterinarians have been looking for a quick and easy way to identify problems with animals’ urinary tract.

Pee Cam

First, Hu wanted to know how urination varied from species to species. The bladder of a large domestic dog can hold 1.4 liters (about 0.4 of a gallon) of fluid, or roughly the amount of a large bottle of soda. An elephant’s bladder, however, can hold 160 liters of fluid, or enough to fill three large garbage cans. Hu wanted to know how this size difference affects the urinary tract and urine flow.

Enter the pee cam. Three of Hu’s graduate students at Georgia Tech used high-speed cameras to record peeing animals at Zoo Atlanta and elsewhere.

They also measured how much pee was produced by each of these animals, which ranged from rats to jaguars to elephants. The scientists supplemented their research with YouTube videos from zoo visitors. Last, the researchers obtained measurements of the animals’ bladder and urethra widths and lengths from other researchers.

Hu and colleagues suspected that bigger animals would take longer pee breaks than smaller animals, since they had to expel larger volumes of urine. But when they began determining the urination duration of each of these animal species, that wasn’t what they found.

“Even though you have thousands of times more urine, it’s coming out in the same amount of time, which is around 20 seconds,” said Hu, whose study appeared recently on the Cornell University website arXiv. (Also see “Urine Battery Turns Pee Into Power.”)

Urination Law Explained

Urinary tract measurements helped to solve the mystery of how animals of such different sizes all pee for the same amount of time.

Larger animals not only had larger bladders, they also had longer and wider urethras. The length of the urethra increases the force of gravity on the urine, which in turn increases how fast pee flows out of the body.

A wider urethra also increases flow rate by increasing the volume of urine that can leave the body at the same time. These increases correlate with the increase in body mass, such that an elephant can empty its bladder in the same amount of time as a cat. (Also see “Turtles Urinate Via Their Mouths—A First.”)

Saying an elephant pees for the same amount of time as a domestic cat seems impressive enough, but it gets even more impressive when you consider just how much urine the elephant produces: several bathtubs’ worth. It’s like having 60 showerheads all going at full blast, Hu said.

For small mammals—those weighing less than 2.2 pounds (a kilogram)—Hu’s Universal Law of Urination wasn’t as accurate. Their urethras were so narrow and short that the surface tension of the urine slowed flow down to mere droplets. Their bladders were also much smaller, so a few drops could successfully empty the bladder. These animals, like rats and mice, can successfully urinate in less than a second.

Animals benefit from such relatively short pee breaks because such pit stops increase risk of predation, Hu noted. Faster urine flow may also help prevent urinary tract infections by flushing out the system.

Now I just have to fight the urge to bring a stopwatch with me into the bathroom.

GPU-maker Nvidia has showcased a gallery of screenshots that depict Ubisoft’s new swashbuckling pirate adventure Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag in ultra-definition glory.

If you’ve always wanted to see Edward Kenway explore the high seas or scour tropical islands across the Caribbean in ultra-definition, we’ve got some good news for you. Nvidia has recently put together a snazzy offering of screens that show off Assassin’s Creed IV in a mix of 3840×2160 and 1920×1080 resolutions.

The company also highlighted the GeForce GTX Holiday Bundle, which includes Batman: Arkham Origins, Splinter Cell: Blacklist, and on Nov. 19 gamers will be able to jump into the pirate boots of Edward Kenway in AC4: Black Flag.
