A new class of SD card has been announced with write
speeds of 30MB per second minimum. The new cards
are aimed at the emerging 4K video market.
The SD association has just announced a new class of
SD-card, aimed at 4K2K television and video products.
The Ultra High Speed (UHS) Class 3 (U3) card will be
able to record 4K2K video and will be available in
SDXC, and SDHC UHS-I and UHS-II formats. “The UHS
Speed Class 3 defines a sizzling fast 30 Megabytes per
second constant minimum write speed to ensure high-
quality video recordings. This means 4K2K video, live
broadcasts and content can be recorded on high-
performance cameras such as Digital Single Lens Reflex
(D-SLR), Digital Single Lens Mirrorless (DSLM),
camcorders and video cameras and then played back
smoothly.” said the SD association in a statement.
“Our new UHS Speed Class 3 standard will give
consumers and businesses more flexibility and
capability as the market shifts to 4K2K video formats,”
said Brian Kumagai, president of the SD Association. The
new U3 cars will be capable of a minimum write speed
of 30MB per second. For comparison the slightly slower
U1 card has a minimum writing speed of 10MB per
second. And yes, new devices which allow for the UHS
cards will be backwards compatible and work will all
previous SD cards as well.
The SD association, for clarification, does not produce
or manufacture products. They are a group founded by
Panasonic, SanDisk and Toshiba in 2000 and exists to
coordinate standards in SD card technology so they can
be used in multiple markets and with several different
products.
